Steer clear of these five critical mistakes to build truly helpful voice AI agents that shine. Ditch rigid scripts for flexible, empathetic interactions, equip your AI with a vast knowledge base and plan for unexpected queries with smart fallback options. Remember to personalize interactions using past conversation data, and never stop monitoring performance to ensure your AI continuously evolves and improves, ultimately providing a superior user experience.
I’m sharing some lessons learned from our experience building voice AI agents, from simple chatbots to complex multi-agent systems.
Most of our deployments went well, but I’ve had my fair share of mistakes and technical hiccups along the way.
Today I want to talk about the 5 mistakes you should avoid when building voice AI agents.
One of the biggest issues is conversations that feel robotic. This happens when developers overcorrect the AI’s initial performance by forcing a script. For example, an AI voice agent for a healthcare provider that follows a strict sequence of questions without adapting to patient input.
Instead of responding to a patient’s concern about a recent diagnosis with empathy, the AI might ask for their date of birth first. This rigidity not only frustrates patients but also doesn’t provide the care they need.
Solution: Design prompts that allow for flexibility and flow. Instead of dictating an exact sequence, have the AI gather necessary information while being open to patient concerns and emotions.
Another big mistake is not planning for edge cases. You can’t predict every possible question or scenario, so having no fallback responses will have the AI respond with incorrect or insensitive answers and potentially upset patients.
For example, if a patient asks about a rare condition and the AI can’t answer, it should respond with something like, “I apologize, but I don’t have enough information to answer that accurately. Would you like me to connect you with a healthcare professional who can help you better?” This way the AI acknowledges the patient’s concern and provides a way forward.
After you deploy a voice AI system, you need to monitor it closely. Key metrics are conversation quality, patient satisfaction and time efficiency. By analyzing transcripts and tracking these metrics you can spot patterns and areas to improve.
For example, if your appointment scheduling agent is struggling with complex scheduling requests, you can optimize it to be more efficient while still being caring. Much of the optimization happens post-deployment as you learn from real-world conversations with patients.
A weak knowledge base severely limits an AI’s ability to respond, especially in healthcare where accuracy is key. The more comprehensive your knowledge base is, the better your agent will be at handling health-related questions. Often healthcare providers don’t provide detailed information about their services or common patient concerns which can hinder the AI’s performance.
For example, if the AI doesn’t know the hospital’s visiting hours or pre-surgery prep instructions, it will struggle to answer correctly and potentially cause anxiety to patients and their families.
Finally, not personalizing can make interactions feel impersonal and cold which is especially bad in healthcare. Voice AI has the advantage of remembering previous conversations. For example, if the AI remembers the patient’s name and previous health concerns, it can create a more supportive and personalized experience.
Think of an AI greeting a returning patient by name and asking how they’ve been since their last appointment—this adds warmth and shows continuity of care which builds trust and satisfaction.
In summary:
By fixing these mistakes you can make a big impact on your voice AI in healthcare.
